The Renovation Selection Schedule: What to Choose and When

A renovation selection is late when someone on site needs it to keep working, not when the homeowner finally starts shopping. The date that matters is the decision deadline created by drawings, ordering, rough-ins, and installation.

A selection schedule turns a long wish list into a manageable sequence. It prevents a faucet from being chosen after the countertop hole is planned, or an appliance from arriving after the cabinets were built around a different specification.

Choose early when the product changes the plan

Appliances, plumbing fixtures, cabinet hardware, lighting, fireplaces, and some flooring systems can affect dimensions or services. They belong near the beginning even if they will be installed much later. The team needs model numbers and technical sheets, not only inspiration photographs.

  • Kitchen appliances: widths, depths, door swings, panels, ventilation, power, gas, water, and clearances.
  • Sinks and faucets: cabinet fit, mounting style, holes, accessories, and plumbing locations.
  • Showers and tubs: valve rough-ins, drains, niches, glass, waterproofing, and access.
  • Lighting: fixture type, location, switching, dimming, colour temperature, and ceiling conditions.
  • Flooring: thickness, installation method, transitions, stairs, underlay, and cabinet sequence.

Online tools such as the IKEA Canada planners can help homeowners explore layouts and visualize product relationships. Use planning tools as an early conversation aid, then verify measurements, specifications, availability, and installation details for the actual project.

Create four decision gates

Gate 1: layout and rough-in decisions

Close the choices that move walls, cabinets, appliances, drains, water lines, ducts, outlets, switches, and fixtures. These decisions inform drawings, pricing, permits, and trade work. Changing them later can affect several completed steps.

Gate 2: long-lead and made-to-order items

Approve cabinetry, windows, doors, specialty tile, custom glass, unique hardware, and other products that are built or sourced for the project. Confirm the order acknowledgement, finish, quantity, expected delivery, storage plan, and return limitations.

Gate 3: installation-dependent finishes

Finalize countertop material and edge, backsplash, flooring transitions, grout, trim profiles, and hardware. Many of these choices require field dimensions or depend on installed work, but the design direction should be established earlier.

Gate 4: final colour and styling

Wall colours, selected sheens, decorative fixtures, and accessories can often wait until larger materials are present. Waiting is not procrastination when the decision does not control construction. It allows the homeowner to evaluate colour beside real cabinetry, floors, and light.

Record the complete selection

A useful selection entry includes manufacturer, product line, model or colour code, size, finish, quantity, supplier, price status, lead time, approval date, and any technical document. ‘Black faucet’ is an idea. A model number and finish name are an orderable decision.

Planning note: Ask whether every visible item has an owner and every schedule-critical item has a decision deadline.

Store approved information in one shared place. Screenshots and text messages are difficult to search and may show outdated options. If a product changes, mark the old one as replaced so both versions do not reach the site.

Coordinate colour as a system

Cabinet colour, wood tone, countertop, tile, flooring, metals, trim, and wall paint should be viewed together under the home’s light. The Can Do More painting and finishing team can prepare larger paint samples and help choose practical sheen levels once the fixed materials are known.

Avoid choosing every room in isolation if the renovation connects them. A warm floor through the main level may influence cabinet white, wall colour, and metal finish in several spaces. Repeating a small number of materials can create continuity and simplify purchasing.

Use alternates without creating a second design

For products with uncertain availability, identify an acceptable alternate before it becomes urgent. The alternate should be checked for dimensions, finish, installation, warranty, and price. A backup is useful only if it can actually replace the original without redesigning the room.

  • Select an alternate tile with the same nominal size and similar thickness.
  • Confirm whether a backup appliance needs different power or cabinetry.
  • Check if an alternate faucet uses the same hole configuration.
  • Compare actual samples instead of relying on a screen colour.
  • Decide who can authorize the alternate and under what conditions.

Selection questions

Do we need to buy everything before demolition?

Not necessarily. Critical and long-lead items should be confirmed, while some field-measured items must wait. The schedule should distinguish ‘selected’, ‘ordered’, ‘delivered’, and ‘install-ready’.

Who checks that a product fits?

Responsibility should be explicit. A supplier may confirm one compatibility, while the designer, contractor, or trade reviews the product in the room. Do not assume that checkout-page acceptance confirms project fit.

What if we change our mind?

Ask whether the order can be changed, what costs apply, and which drawings or trades are affected. A change before ordering is very different from a change after fabrication or rough-in.
