How Design Fees Work

Starting fees cover design services only. Final fees depend on scope and complexity, and your proposal confirms the deliverables, meetings and revisions. Products, materials, construction, labour, delivery and installation are separate.
Additional design time for work outside the approved scope is $200/hour + GST, with your approval before additional work begins.
Not included: structural engineering drawings and services, if required, which are arranged separately.

What is included in the $295 design consultation?

The 2-hour design consultation includes an in-depth discussion of your vision, goals, and budget, a review of your existing space, preliminary recommendations for layout and finishes, an overview of our design process and packages, and a clear roadmap for next steps. This consultation helps you understand what's possible for your space and provides a foundation for creating detailed design plans if you choose to move forward. For Can Do More clients, the price of the initial consultation is taken off whichever design package you decide to go with.

How much do the design packages cost?

Design is priced by the scope of your space. Our all-inclusive Small Room Design package starts at $4,000 + GST for a single room under 100 sq. ft., such as a main bathroom, small laundry room, bedroom, foyer or mudroom. Elevated Room Design (an ensuite, primary bedroom, media room or office) starts at $6,000 + GST, and Larger Space Design (a kitchen, living room, dining room or defined basement space) starts at $8,000 + GST. Multi-room projects, large renovations, new builds and commercial spaces get a custom proposal, whether the scope is large or small. 3D renderings are included with our design packages. For Can Do More clients, the $295 consultation is taken off the price of any package you go with. Room complexity matters alongside size, so we confirm every detail in your proposal before work begins.

What do the design packages include, and what is a custom package?

Every package brings together the construction drawings and the selections. You get space planning and room layout, a design concept, finish and fixture selections, key construction drawings (as-builts, proposed floor plans, electrical plans and finishes plans), key elevations, specifications for approved selections and a complete design package. The drawings are the construction roadmap, and the specifications give your builder and trades the model numbers, finishes and sizes they need to price and install everything correctly. A custom package is built around your specific scope, large or small: a single built-in, a whole floor, a new build or a commercial space. We set the drawings, selections, millwork scope and support you need, with the design fee confirmed before work begins.

Do I have to use Can Do More for the renovation if I use your design services?

While our design services are integrated with our renovation capabilities for the best experience, you are not required to use us for construction. However, most clients choose our design-build approach because it eliminates coordination issues between separate designers and contractors, ensures the construction team understands the design intent, provides accountability with one point of contact, and often results in better pricing since we can provide accurate estimates from the detailed plans we created.

How long does the design process take?

The design timeline depends on project complexity and your decision-making pace. Initial consultation takes up to 2 hours. Drawings typically require 2-3 weeks from concept to final plans, selections can take 1-2 weeks depending on the number of finishes and your availability for showroom visits, and 3D renderings are usually ready within 1-2 weeks. Most complete design packages are finished within 4-6 weeks, though we can expedite if you have a specific construction start date. Your proposal confirms the timeline for your project.
